How it all started

When Chateau Amsterdam’s founder, Remy, came home from school at the age of fifteen, there were 3 concealed bottles of wine on the dining table next to a tasting sheet with his name on it. That’s where it all started. Remy’s love for winemaking started at a tender age due to his father Jos. First Remy found an old factory located at the shore of the IJ canal in Amsterdam. Not long after his father Jos started an apprenticeship at one of the best-known Italian winemakers (Alois Lageder). The first 6.000 wines were bottled, labeled and corked in 2018. The rest is history.

Where do the grapes come from?

We only work with fruit from carefully selected partners throughout Europe. Farmers, families and entrepreneurs who take care of their land, the plants, the harvest and their people. Over the years, our farmers have become part of the Chateau Amsterdam family. Together we determine a number of things: how are we going to prune, how are we going to take care of the land and when are we going to harvest. The timing of the harvest determines the amount of sugars, acids and flavours and aromas that the grape imparts to the wine.

A sustainable choice

As a modern company, with a warm heart for our planet, all our choices are weighed with sustainability as the main pillar. Transparency is key to this. We are what we do, the outcomes can always be better, but we set the bar high. We keep questioning everything, and opt for improvement where possible – so here’s an invitation to you: keep us sharp and feel free to point us to progress.

Since 2023 we’re making serious steps to a 100% bio harvest and striving to have our complete product range skal-certified by 2025. Not all our farmers will join us on this journey and they also deserve a year to fully orient themselves on new opportunities. Our bottles have adopted a new packaging approach: lightweight eco-glass, recycled paper, corks with a carbon-negative footprint, and lightweight screw caps. Our large yellow building is filled with solar panels, enabling us to operate 100% on solar power.

We don't believe in waste

In our production, we proudly embrace the zero-waste principle, where we try to give each bit of waste a repurpose. We do this with a sprinkle of creativity and a lot of collaboration. Teaming up with Oedipus, we craft a distinctive beer from peels and seeds, while The Stillery takes charge of the leftovers to create a refined grappa. Naturally, we also make our own sparkling Piquette d’Amsterdam.

As for what remains, we generously contribute it to the local pig farmer at Buitengewone Varkens in Amsterdam-Noord. This way, we wrap up our production with style but also ensure that every aspect of our process contributes to a circular and flavourful future.
